Port Alberni Parks & Gardens
• A WorldWeb.com Travel Guide to Parks & Gardens in Port Alberni, British Columbia.
This 327-hectare park is an amalgamation of Stamp Falls and Money’s Pool provincial parks. Lovely waterfalls and several scenic trails are features of Stamp River. In August and December, watch the spectacular run of thousands of Pacific salmon as they jump up the ladders to their spawning beds.
Located in the Alberni Valley, this lake sees a lot of activity – besides many visitors, it is the runway for the huge Martin Mars water bombers that hurry off to extinguish forest fires. Sproat Lake's warm water attracts many swimmers, water skiers, wind surfers and anglers. Hiking trails exist, one leading to a prehistoric petroglyph, K'ak'awin, which is assumed to be a mythical marine creature. A large public marina, triple boat launch and campsites are also situated in the park.
Located 23 km northwest of Port Alberni, Taylor Arm is close to Sproat Lake and offers group campsites only. A day use area is also on site. Several trails exist to access Sprout Lake.
Access to this undeveloped and remote park is very difficult and can only be done via logging roads. Those who manage to access the park's high elevation plateau will be rewarded with views of Clayoquot sound as well as the old-growth forest which includes Sitka spruce, hemlock and cedar.
